The diversity of silk: Differences between silk twill, silk satin, crêpe de Chine, habutai and chiffon

Schalfabrik.de offers you a wide selection of different qualities! Silk is one of the finest and most versatile natural fibers in the world. But not all silk is created equal – depending on the weaving and processing, very different qualities with unique properties are created. Here we present the most important types of silk:

1. Silk Twill

Characteristics:

  • Twill is a twill weave that is recognizable by its characteristic diagonal structure.

  • Moderate to difficult.

  • Silky shine, very durable.

  • Has good drape but more stability than satin or chiffon.

  • Often used for high-quality scarves, shawls (e.g. Hermès), ties and blouses.

Optics:

  • Recognizable by the fine diagonal ribs.

  • Matt-gloss, not as high gloss as satin.

Typical use: Luxury scarves, fine accessories.

2. Silk Satin

Characteristics:

  • Smooth satin weave with high gloss.

  • Very soft, heavy and flowing.

  • Back usually matte, front glossy.

  • Pure luxury – often used for evening dresses, lingerie or bridal wear.

Optics:

  • Highly reflective shine on the surface.

  • Very smooth handle.

Typical use: Evening wear, lingerie, elegant blouses.

3. Silk Crêpe de Chine

Characteristics:

  • Slightly grainy feel due to twisted yarns (crepe yarns).

  • Matte, slightly textured finish.

  • Light to moderate, flowing.

  • Very resistant to wrinkles.

Optics:

  • No shine, but a matte, elegant finish.

  • Slightly transparent to dense texture.

Typical use: Blouses, elegant day dresses, scarves.

4. Silk Habutai (also: Habotai)

Characteristics:

  • Light and soft, originally from Japan.

  • Smooth surface, slightly shiny.

  • Often used for lining fabrics, but also for clothing.

  • Thinner than twill or satin.

Optics:

  • Delicately shiny, very fine and soft.

  • Mostly single-colored, as it is very easy to dye.

Typical use: Lining, light summer clothing, silk painting.

5. Silk Chiffon

Characteristics:

  • Very light, transparent, airy.

  • Grainy, dry feel.

  • Slightly elastic due to the dense twist.

  • Often needs to be lined or layered.

Optics:

  • Translucent, matte, slightly flowing.

  • Very feminine and delicate.

Typical use: Scarves, flounces, evening wear, tulle effects.
